It had been used for some time to describe the effect of some of the naturalistic paintings emanating from the so-called Barbizon school of painters. While this title was apparently chosen in haste for the catalogue, the term “Impressionism” was not new. Monet described how he came up with a title for the painting: “ They asked me for a title for the catalogue…it couldn’t really be taken for a view of Le Havre, so I said: ‘Put Impression’“. Two hundred works were shown and about 4,000 people attended, including, of course, some rather unsympathetic critics. The exhibition, by a group calling itself the “Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs etc” was led by Monet, along with other such future luminaries as Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley. Impression, soleil levant ( Impression, Sunrise) was debuted in April 1874 in Paris at an independent exhibition launched as an alternative to the official Salon de Paris exhibitions of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. One painting from this series was to become very famous. Sanat Tarihi, Dördüncü Baskı, Varlık Yayınları, İstanbul. In 1872, Claude Monet visited his hometown of Le Havre in the north west of France and proceeded to paint six canvases depicting the port “ during dawn, day, dusk, and dark and from varying viewpoints, some from the water itself and others from a hotel room looking down over the port“. Büyük Ressamlar Monet, Üçüncü Basım, Koleksiyon Yayıncılık, İstanbul. Empresyonistler Ayrıntıda Sanat, İkinci Basım, Türkiye İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları, İstanbul. Monet's work was not only by name but by his character and his style as an ideal illustration of the impressionist painting. Reducing the color, the expression of everything with only two opposite colors (blue and orange), the ambiguity of the borderlines and the revival of vibrations in the air gap by brush strokes were the new technical elements. "Impression, Sunrise" The capture of a moment with the flare of the sun through the fog over the port of Le Havre in Normandy was the proof of a formal innovative conception. The narrative style in this table was brand new. He tried to create the effect that the orange sun lights reflected in the light wavy water quickly change color. Monet, caught the moment when the sun began to shine orange. In almost all of his works, Monet tried to describe the shadows in the water and the reflections of light. The painter sometimes applied colors with intense brush strokes. The painting was not telling the scene but the moment. Monet was interested in the changing nature of light rather than pictorial content. Blue and gray-blue tones were used in the sky. Orange tones were used for reflection in the sun and water. Monet's palette was almost focused on the blue and orange relationship that complemented each other. Monet applied the thinned paint with light brush touches to describe the morning impressions. In the background, the steaming chimneys with the masts of the ships were vaguely noticeable in the fog. The port of Le Havre on the Normandy coast seemed to be covered in the morning mist. The name of the Impressionist style was thus seated.Īs can be seen in "Impression, Sunrise“, the point of departure of impressionism was light. The title of Leroy's critique was the exhibition of Impressionists. Louis Leroy named Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" as the name of the whole group. The art critic Louis Leroy wrote the most serious critique of the exhibition. Even though the views of the critics on the exhibition are divided into two, the name of the new trend movement came from this exhibition. Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" in his work were among the exhibits. Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" was among those exhibited. In 1874, this artist organization opened its first exhibition, which lasted one month, at Boulevard des Capucines in the studio of photographer Nadar. They decided to open an exhibition organized and financed by them. In late 1873, a group of painters, including Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Sisley, and Pissarro, gathered together.
